In the grout is my way of describing position we in habit as both a part of our cultural structures and that which is between the blocks holding them together.  It is an interesting place to be because we can’t always see the building for the bricks. But once we are aware of our cultural constructions and our place in the structure we are able to engage it, manipulate it. Once we understand how these structures work we are able to deconstruct and reconstruct then. (To serve our own purpose)
An other more poetic way to approach the idea is though the metaphor “Treceira Margem do Rio” The Third Bank of the River is the term writer João Guimarães Rosa uses to describe “an independent place, from which the person can break from the limiting binary oppositions of his or her reality”. This third bank points to the possibility of a culture to create a third space where previously there seemed to be two.
In my work I act as both artist and anthropologist. My job as an anthropologist is to understand and deconstruct the cultural systems in which we operate. As an artist I take the decoded construction and re-encode them as art for the audience to then decode again.( if a=b and b=c then a=c) In this way I hope to perpetuate a type of cultural literacy.
I want to use this web log as a space for dialogue of art making and ideas
